The last coconut drifted
(2025)

Thank you to all the community, family and friends that made this work possible. This exhibition was made by community for community - from the carving, concept and presentation.

Supported by Parramatta Artist Studios, Create NSW and Blacktown Arts Centre.

With acknowledgement to Manihikian poet Kauraka Kauraka, The last coconut drifted is an extraction from the poem Three Coconuts - Akari tokutoru, an iteration of physical disconnect, spiritual embodiment and cultural reconnection.

This work looks at the functional materiality of everyday objects in the Cook Islands, with the recognition of the ancestral skillset that is taken to complete them. Through a collection of handmade, borrowed and gifted works, the show was a communal representation of collective cultural making and the importance of passing generational cross-cultural knowledge.
